He/she should check the "Freedmen's cohabitation register"
-- the 1866 record of marriages among slaves, which can be
found at the county courthouse and at LVA on microfilm.
The cohabitation register lists the marriages of former
slaves, giving name of children and former owners. He/she
should also look at the other BRFAL records from the
county. To find surviving plantation documents, you'll
have to track down descendants of the masters. Also start
an exhaustive check of university archives in Virginia and
elsewhere. A reference librarian can help with a computer
search of manuscript collections.
