John, take a look at the Rockbridge County Chancery records which are scanned and on-line at the Library of Virginia website.  There was an 1832 law suit involving John and Nancy Dale (Joseph Reed vs. Alexander Dale etc).  I haven't looked at the rest on the McCarty suit, but some of these old suits contain wonderful family gems.  Library of Virginia provides an enormous service for researchers in making them available on-line  . . . and they continually add counties.

LVA's chancery index:  http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/ .   Just plug in the county and surname/s.

Best, Jan

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] McCartys of Rockbridge County, VA

I have traced my McCarty line back to Rockbridge county, VA, in the 1820 census.  I presume the John (Jno.) McCarty there in the 1810 census is of this line, too.

MCCARTY JNO VA ROCKBRIDGE NO TWP LISTED 1810    00100 10100
[1 male 16-25, 1 female <10, 1 female 16-25].   No other McCartys in Rockbridge County in 1810.
MCCARTY JOSEPH VA ROCKBRIDGE LEXINGTON 1820    011210  10001
[1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44]
MCCARTY JAMES VA ROCKBRIDGE LEXINGTON 1820      000010 10201
[1 male 26-44,  1 female <10, 2 females 16-25, 1 female >45]
MCCARTY JUSTIN VA ROCKBRIDGE LEXINGTON 1820      200010  20001
[2 males <10, 1 male 26-44, 2 females <10, 1 female >45]
However, there is also a John McCardy
MCCARDY   JOHN    VAROCKBRIDGELEXINGTON     1820     210010 00110
[2 males <10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-45]
and an Andrew McCurdy
MCCURDY    ANDREWVA    ROCKBRIDGE   LEXINGTON1820   100010 10010
[1 male <10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-45]
[The Heritage Quest copy of this census report is very faint and nearly illegible.]

For the 1810 census my Joseph was in PA:
1810   >   Pennsylvania   >   WASHINGTON   >   MORRIS       Series: M252  Roll: 57   Page: 95
MCCARTY   JOSEPH    PA   WASHINGTON   MORRIS   10001 10010 00
[1 male 0-9, 1 male >45, 1 female 0-9, 1 female 26-44].

One reference says Joseph was born in PA.

James and Justin were married in Rockbridge County.
James C & Nancy Dale; 15 Nov 1825; d/o Samuel; min-Andrew Heron, Presbyterian.
Justin & Susanna Lawson; 7 Sep 1815; d/o David; min- Andrew B. Davidson, Presbyterian.

Can anyone help me push this McCarty line back?

John E. McCarty
