According to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnwayne/1860agcen/page1.htm, 
 reported value of horses and mules in Wayne County, TN averaged $90.

more than a single similar horse, not to mention that the mare had been proven

Folks;

I don't know anything about 1860's horse  valuations.  When my ggfather, 
Andrew W. Thompson, went into Co. G  (Halifax County. Virginia) of the 
6th Virginia Cavalry in 1861, his horse  was valued at $150.
