I am not sure if it is mispelled on the tombstone as he is in a lot with
other "Ellett" members. It was the cemetery index cards they use to locate
people that someone wrote the last name down wrong and so couldn't first
find him until we started searching for his wife instead and then they
looked in the book and cross referenced to find the error.

BUT... I have run into the same sort of stumbling blocks you mention - even
people placing wrong years on the headstone or burying women under their
maiden name in their family plots rather than with the husband under his
name.

Example... Lemuel Yerby. His death cert says he was born one year even
giving age in y-m-d format while his tombstone says 2 years different!

Eric,

Although this isn't very funny having your ancestors name spelled wrong on
his own tombstone I had to chuckle a bit. Sometimes the "Informer" for a
dead person can build a terrible brick wall for us all. For instance on my
Grandmother Buford's death certificate my uncle put her name as Mayme
Louise
Peterson. As that was just about my starting point for my research on my
paternal side so many. many years ago it sure threw me a pretty wide curve
as her name was "Maria Louisa" PetersEn. I didn't find out her "real name"
until three years later when I was doing research at the Historical Library
in Lincoln, Nebraska and actually stumbled onto her marriage certificate.
I
stood there looking at the certificate incredulously thinking some very
unkind words about my dear uncle. I would definitely label him as one of
O'Reilly's "PINHEADS"

Hope everyone is having a great summer... fern

Mystery solved... Hollywood Cemetery was able to locate him with some
additional information. Apparently they mispelled his name on the card as
Elliott and is in the Burial Registry Book under James Ellett (his son).
He
is at
Section L, Lot 38.
