From June 17-June 27, the Library of Virginia will host a small exhibition
featuring twelve "Free Negro Registers" recently digitized as a part of the
Virginia Untold project. These register books illustrate how white
governing authorities in Virginia systematically deprived free Black and
multiracial men and women of their legal rights. Not all, but many of these
register books have survived. The Library of Virginia holds 39 volumes from
17 localities. The style of register and the information recorded in the
register books differs from year to year and across regions. The registers
selected for the exhibition showcase these differences in style and format
and provide rare glimpses into the lives of free Black and multiracial
Virginians.

On Friday, June 17 from 11am-2pm, Lydia Neuroth, project manager for Virginia
Untold <https://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/aan/>, will be on hand
to discuss the records and answer questions.
