Mr. McGinnis,

The King George Co. judgments (which would include criminal cases) are not microfilmed. The order books, which index and abstract the loose papers, are on microfilm. You might also be able to access the microfilmed order books through an LDS Family History Center, if one is near you. The digital images of Virginia local court records available through Family Search and Ancestry (i.e., the Virginia Probate Project) DO NOT include the court order books.

The King George Co. judgments for 1870 are stored at the Library of Virginia. If the case survives, it would be located with those records. We have a list of professional researchers available on our website (https://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/proresearchers.pdf). Since you have a specific month and year (typically that is how the records are organized), you may wish to contact the Library's Archives Research Services to determine if you could request copies of those records. https://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/order.asp

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] Remote Research

Hi all,

I am new to VA-ROOTS and looking for answer to what is probably an easy question for those here. I am doing research for an article I am writing on a murder that happened in 1870 in King George County. I am able to look at newspaper articles at the time and have a lot of good information but missing one thing. Any records from the King George County Courts which are on microfilm at the library. I have the date of trial (March 1870 indictment; April 1870 trail) and names of accused/convicted William and Warner Taylor BUT the records are not digitized yet AND I currently work/live in Singapore.

So my question, is this something I should pay the library to find, copy, and eMail me OR a researcher?

Thank you for any help or guidance.

Keith
