I think that Hampshire Co WV separated from Franklin
Co. VA in the 1700's, but would it be possible that
people living in Hampshire in the 1870's or so might
still be confused at to which state they are in? My
g-grandfather James William GILL was born in 1877.
His
death certificate (1938) says he was born in Cold
Stream, WV but on my grandfather's (Floyd GILL)
birth
certificate in 1921 in Nebraska says he was born in
Winchester, WV. There isn't a Winchester in WV as far
as I know, but there is next door in Franklin Co.,
VA.
