Greetings, Records Officers!  The Records Oversight Committee met in June and authorized the following changes to general retention schedules:

GS-15 - County and Municipal Governments - Social Services
These revisions were recommended by the Virginia Department of Social Services, Family Services division. Family Services: Adoptions - Children Originating in Virginia (GS-15-101009) is defunct and superseded by Family Services: Adoption Records within the VDSS specific schedule (765-003, series 000097). Family Services: Adoptions - Children Originating Outside Virginia (GS-15-101010) is defunct and superseded by GS-15-101038, Family Services: Service Cases. There are two new series: Family Services: Foster Care Cases – Adopted (GS-15-200765) and Family Services: State Adoption Assistance (GS-15-200766). There are minor description or citation edits to four series:  Family Services: Foster Care Cases - Not Reunited with Families (GS-15-101032), Family Services: Foster Care Cases - Reunited with Families (GS-15-101033), Family Services: Service Cases (GS-15-101038), and Family Services: Title IV-E Records (GS-15-200075).

GS-101 - State Agencies - Administrative Records
A new series was added, series 200768, to cover Ombudsman records across state offices.  This is identical to a series previously added to the GS-19 schedule for county and municipal governments.

As an aside:  For those of you in the Richmond Metro, you might be interested in participating in an upcoming program at the Library. StoryCorps’ One Small Step pairs strangers with opposing political views to get to know each other as people. It's a national effort to bring our country together one conversation at a time. Each conversation is moderated by a trained facilitator and, with participant permission, interviews are archived at the Library of Congress. Apply to be matched for a recorded conversation at the Library of Virginia this fall. Let your analyst know if you have any questions, and as always, thanks for all you do for the Commonwealth.
