Transforming Chaos: Developing a Data Placement Strategy

Multiple copies of unstructured data live everywhere -- on desktops, laptops, file shares, removable media, cloud shares, SharePoint, etc.  But before you can organize, you need to first answer some basic questions: Where is the right place for specific content to live? How and where do we keep as few copies as possible? Who can and should have access to what? These are all elements of a data placement strategy.  At its simplest level a data placement strategy ensures a place for everything and everything in its place.

Mark Diamond is recognized as an industry thought leader in proactive records and information management, litigation readiness and risk & compliance strategies.  Under his leadership, Contoural has grown to be the largest independent provider of legal and regulatory, litigation readiness, and risk & compliance consulting services.

Mark is an online columnist for Inside Counsel Magazine, as well as an author of numerous white papers for both the legal and IT communities. He is a regular speaker at the Association for Corporate Counsel Annual Meeting and at numerous legal and IT industry conferences.

TransFORMing paper processes:  lessons learned in creating an enterprise-scale electronic forms platform

For the past 2 years Mr. Frost has lead a division of the US Department of the Interior’s paperless effort driven by the Presidential Memorandum for Managing Government Records. This memorandum marked the beginning of an Executive Branch-wide effort to reform records management policies and practices and to develop a 21st-century framework for the management of Government records.

Mr. Frost will be discussing lessons learned as his team converts over 10,000 paper forms to online forms for the Federal Government. Specifically the importance of thinking “outside of the box” when changing from paper-driven to data-driven processes.

Phishing, Drones, and You

Though we have to entrust our most sensitive personal information (PI/PII) to countless Internet-based systems in this always-on, sharing economy, how do we keep it secure? Traditional approaches are no longer sufficient; we have to make the hackers work harder. Fortunately, there are a number of relatively easy ways to do this. Chief among them is identifying phishing messages, and knowing how the Internet of Things affects your security, and the cost of your health and auto insurance. We'll identify the top ten best ways to ensure your cybersecurity and protect your employer's assets as well.

Karen McDowell, an information security analyst at the University of Virginia, has worked in information technology for more than 15 years. Her curiosity about early Peer-2-Peer programs like Kazaa developed into a serious interest in computer and network security. She studies cyber security problems, presents state-of-the-art information to teach people how to protect data and identities, and publishes articles on cyber security. Karen holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, has earned MCP, GSEC, and GCIH certifications, and is currently studying advanced enterprise security. She is a reviewer for OUCH! (Securing the Human Monthly Security Awareness Newsletter), and is an active member of Educause, Virginia Cyber Security Partnership, Richmond VA InfraGard, and the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni, Richmond VA Division.

This event will be held Wednesday, March 9th from 8:30 to 4:00. The event includes breakfast, lunch and breaks and will be held at the Embassy Suites, 2925 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA. Cost will be $125. Please contact the chapters at [log in to unmask] for more information.
