Hi Jessie,

I am currently the records manager for the Stafford County Treasurer's office, for me that means understand to the fullest extent the set schedules for my department, but also some from finance and other departments. It also means understanding the document being filed to some degree and making sure it will be found swiftly should a reason arise that it needs to be "pulled" from storage.

What I struggle with most is the courses that were offered in Richmond are no longer being offered. I began this task with little information or training and have developed it into a project I can be proud of especially around the new fiscal years. However, having someone that has done this several years to talk about what has been most effective for them would be most helpful to me. I am not one of the lucky ones, I also have other duties the Treasurer's office requires. This means I don't have a lot of time to file and infolinx and one of my other duties have conflicting software which doesn't allow a lot of room for multitasking.

I think the hardest thing I have run into when I first began was differentiating between how I should file a certain document. The treasurer's office receives all kinds of things with regards to deposits. After reading several "general schedules for localities" one document could actually be stated in Finances Records Retention and Disposition Schedule, however I'm filing for the Treasurer's office. I wonder if this causes some confusion with other localities.

Thanks so much for letting me share!

Hi Records Officers,

The Library of Virginia has plans to celebrate Records Management Month in April and we're working on a session devoted to what it means to be a records officer. In order to make the content useful for attendees, we are in need of some assistance!

Veteran records officers: What have you learned along the way that would've been nice to have known when you started as a records officer? Are there aspects of the job that you still struggle with?

New records officers: What do you need help with? What questions do you have that aren't answered on our web site?

We'd value any and all input you have regarding the duties of the designated records officer.

Hope to hear from you!

Jessie
