I simply took on the duties as the office records manager when we literally ran out of storage space because no one had done anything with records, other than file them away for "future use." Surveying our records has been an on again/off again task because of the workload we all have in our office. Attending the records management workshops at LVA was a huge help to me - I still get lost sometimes trying to determine the correct schedule and series for some of our records, but our LVA analyst is always quick to respond when I fire off a signal flare! Best advice I can give is: 1) whenever a new file is created, label it with the then-current schedule, series number and projected purge date; 2) go through the files by type (applications, vacation/work schedules, etc.) in July and January to purge, based on fiscal year v. calendar year; and 3) double check for schedule, series and retention time period changes before actually purging those records. It takes time to do this, but is well worth the effort. Capt. Martin R. In order to make the content useful for attendees, we are in need of some assistance! Veteran records officers: What have you learned along the way that would've been nice to have known when you started as a records officer? Are there aspects of the job that you still struggle with? New records officers: What do you need help with? What questions do you have that aren't answered on our web site? We'd value any and all input you have regarding the duties of the designated records officer. Hope to hear from you! Jessie Jessie R.
