I did a quick search of their database, but was not impressed at this time. Maybe years from now, if they build an inventory, it may prove useful. Using "the-much-costlier-other-service", searching for my fathers first and last name, I found 53 matches just in Virginia. On the "namesinstone" website, I only found 5 in the entire US. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sondra Reger" <[log in to unmask]> To: <[log in to unmask]> Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2013 7:56 PM Subject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] "Names in Stone" website The cost is either $39.99 per year for complete membership or $7.95 monthly for complete membership. There is also a free limited membership, but you had to register, etc. before continuing so I did not proceed. In case anyone has missed this information it was reprinted from "Out of the Box"- April 12, 2013 in this month' *The Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter¨* Vol. XXXIX, No. 2, April 2013. Many thanks to the VGS for reprinting this in the newsletter! *"Names in Stone" (http://www.namesinstone.com) is a unique on-line repository designed to help researchers find and document cemetery records and maps. Most cemetery web sites post an alphabetical listing of burials for a single cemetery. Names in Stone allows the visitor to search an alphabetical listing of multiple cemeteries and view the actual grave location on an interactive map. Visitors can now see maps showing grave groupings that can help piece together family relationships and can contribute their own maps and information with unique on-line mapping tools. Most cemetery sites provide a snapshot of deceased information as of a given date and are rarely updated with new information. Names In Stone provides dynamic data, giving participating cemeteries and the public the ability to update information on the site as frequently as they choose.* * * *The web site provides the following capabilities:* *. Search: find your ancestors in many cemeteries from home.* *. View: view ancestor burial locations and adjacent graves.* *. Contribute: post comments, photos, even map entire cemeteries.* *. Build: build your families and identify relationships.* * * *The Limited Membership allow members to communicate with others researching cemeteries, share information about a grave location, a headstone photograph, or an obituary and is the gateway to building cemetery maps on-line.* * * *The Complete Membership offers all the benefits of the Limited Membership plus the convenience of regular reminders of changes and additions to the burial database."* Granted, I guess it all depends on the participating cemeteries as to whether a person can research what they need; but this is a rather novel idea. I haven't checked the site out yet; but one can only hope it has a free trial period!
