I know my Moss from Second Creek, Monroe County, WV were listted as mulattos in the 1870 and their was black in the family through Jacob Moss (a freed slave that was mulatto or black). The wives were white but the children were listed as mulatoo until about 1900. That is when my great great father listed himselft as white. He was born in 1865 and married around 1890. All his children, including my grandmother were listed as white. ________________________________ From: Sondra Reger <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Sent: Mon, January 24, 2011 1:57:30 PM Subject: Re: Have you written about about your ancestors? In only one census an entire family was listed as mulatto. Ones previous and afterward were white. I believe census recorders made LOTS of mistakes! FYI.....??in those census, native americans were also sometimes listed asmulatto.? I have an instance of a? family where the husbandis listed as mulatto, wife as white, his children from 1st marriagelisted as mulatto, his children with current wife listed aswhite.? He was native american. Suzann:? I would say that one of the so called "foot warmers" turned into a baby.? My great-great grandfather?was a Mulatto and all his children were list as mulattoes until the late 1800s.? I was dropped in the early party of the 19 century.? keith Suzann, ? I'm curious.? My great-grandfather "passed" from mulatto to white.? I was completely unaware of this blip in my racial background until a few years ago.? Now I find in trying to understand and write about this aspect of the family history that it is probably impossible for me to appreciate the thoughts and feelings and actions of my mulatto family.? ? I don't know if my problem falls into the area of your interest.? If it does, know that my personal computer is down and I check in at the library every couple of days.? I hope to be back on line on my own computer soon. ?
