As the Library of Virginia’s archivists continue to catalog items in the
collection we are often struck by the amazing stories a simple volume or piece
of paper can hold. One recent item added to the catalog is the Robertson
Hospital Reunion Register. Former patients reunited in Richmond in 1896 to see
Sally Tompkins, often called the Confederacy’s Florence Nightingale . At her
own expense Tompkins, the only female commissioned officer in the
Confederate military, ran Robertson Hospital in Richmond during the Civil War
with strict standards of hygiene and comfort. The rate of recovery there was
remarkable. See the latest entry in this week's Out of the Box blog.
