For several years persons descended from David Douglass have been searching for more information about him. I have a marriage bond that is dated 6 November 1777. He married Martha Jones in Mecklenburg County, VA. Francis Lightfoot signed the bond. David and Martha's children appear to be born in Mecklenburg County. We have a copy of a land transaction 27 December 1779. David and Martha sold about 115 acres to Robert Brooks Rose of Mecklenburg for 3500 pounds of tobacco. He is reported to have served in the Revolutionary War and was given land in Georgia for this service. Then we have a twenty year void until he arrived in Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia about 1798 or 1799. In Georgia he is reported to have been a glove maker and also to make other clothing...I think from leather. I think this is interesting and could hold a key about his background in VA and during the twenty year period he is missing. It seems he would have learned this skill in VA from a family member. I have talked with the genealogist at the library in Boynton and little is available. We have ordered many reels from LVA searching for information about the Jones family and Douglass family and searched in the genealogy library in Fort Wayne, IN. David's children were very involved in Georgia life and his son, Jones Douglass, started the first Sunday school in Gwinnett County GA...it is now the greater Atlanta area. Others also were very involved in the Methodist church so it is likely David was a Methodist. Jones married Rebecca Tillman, and I know there were Tillmans in VA too. David is reported to be born in Scotland about 1752. I am not certain that this is true. His father may already have been in VA., and he could have been born in VA. I have found a David Sr. and Jr. in Mecklenburg and also in Granville County, NC. In Granville I found notation dated 21 September 1759, of a Sus'a Douglas, orphan of David Douglas deceased, allowed to chose her brother William Douglas of Lunenburg to be her guardian. David and Martha had three sons, James, Stephen and Jones and several daughters. I descend from Jones Douglass. I also a found a 1805 marriage bond for a James Douglass in Mecklenburg county. He married Nancy Johnson. He may be David's son. I do not know. In October, I will be in VA and would like to continue exploring this. If you have any thoughts about David Douglass, all of the Douglass clan will appreciate your input. Sandra Sandra M. Long, Ph.D The OMNI Centre for Public Media, Inc. P.O.
