Hello, all - It's a common misconception that Heritage Quest Online (HQO) doesn't include the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules. I believed this myself until I attended the NGS Conference in Raleigh this year, and had a chance to talk to the ProQuest staff about it.

The slave schedules in HQO are buried kind of deep, and there's no search engine for the slave schedules, but they are available for browsing.

Here's how you get to them:

Go to the Census in Heritage Quest Online.
Select "Browse" rather than "Search". (It should be right under the Census tab.)

Select Census Year: 1850 or 1860
Select State: [one of the southern states]
Select County: scroll down until you see "Slave"
Select Location: select "Slave"

You will get scans of the entire Slave schedule for the year you chose in the state you chose. Unfortunately, in HQO, there's no way to do an automated search of these slave schedules for specific names.
