You might check to see if this person was captured and interred as a  
prisoner of war.  This happened to a relative of mine during the Civil War  - 
reported by his unit as missing for a few months - finally found to be then  
currently residing in one of the castles of Libby.
 
Back to the Revolutionary War - I remember reading that, units which  started 
out as state militia and formed for the purpose of defending a  particular 
state, at times resented being nationalized and had a tendency to  'lose' 
officers and men, alike, who just didn't show up.

If a man was repeatedly fined for not reporting for duty in the  
Revolutionary War is that enough proof that he did NOT serve in this war?
