As most of you know, the Library of Virginia (LVA) has authority to
issue regulations establishing procedures for the disposal, physical
destruction or disposition of public records. Some years ago (I believe
it was 2003), the General Assembly tasked LVA with developing
regulations (that will have the force of law once they have been
approved under the Virginia Administrative Processes Act) for the
destruction of records containing social security numbers.

The proposed "REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE DESTRUCTION OF PUBLIC RECORDS
CONTAINING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS" can be found on the Virginia
Regulatory Town Hall website ( http://www.townhall.state.va.us/ ) or by
clicking on the link on the Library of Virginia Archival and Records
Management Services website.

The opportunity for you and/or your agency/locality's IT to comment on
the draft regulations ends the week after next on November 2, 2007.
Comments can be made on the Town Hall Website or can be sent to the
Director of Archival & Records Management Services, Conley Edwards.
