Thanks for the thanks Cousin Vicki. I didn't realize the tax assessor didn't visit the individual homes (just another example of "you learn something every day"). I almost didn't include that info on taxes in the post, as I mainly wanted to show how Road Order Books were a good source of info for neighbors and the satellite site was a good source of information for showing where your ancestors lived (if the place mentioned in the records you have doesn't exist anymore, use google). You learn something every day. Best wishes to all, Tim In a message dated 9/2/2006 2:01:48 P.M. If it was mandated that the people submit to their tax precinct by a certain date what method was used to be sure of compliance? Would the tax collector do a sweep of the area or would neighbor turn in neighbor? The set-up sounds very similar to our voter precincts with the exception that taxes were mandated whereas voting is voluntary. Speaking of which...does anybody care to enlighten the masses as to what voting records are available in the Commonwealth of Virginia? I have found them helpful in other states. While you are absolutely right that folks had to go to the tax collector rather than having him call on them, the order in which names were written can still hold some good clues. Often family members went as a group or one person paid the taxes for several.
