There is a discussion going on on an English list concerning marrying one's deceased spouse's sibling. Apparently it was illegal in England until 1907, although it seems many couples did it anyway. I have found that here in the USA it was not uncommon for a widower to marry his late wife's sister, and have found instances, though less common, of a widow marrying her brother-in-law. My question is: is anyone aware of any laws here that prohibited such a marriage? I'm talking about legislative or judicial laws, not ecclesiastical.
