The next program in the Virginia Heritage Resource Center's Mining the Treasure House Lecture series will take place at noon on Thursday, 12 September, 2002, in the conference rooms adjacent to the lobby in the Library of Virginia at 800 East Broad Street in downtown Richmond. The speaker will be Dr. Gregg Kimball, Assistant Director of the Publications and Educational Services Division at the Library of Virginia. The title of his talk is, "Sinners, Songsters, and Saints: The 1936 Virginia Prison Recordings." In that year two musicologists recorded music by African American inmates at the Virginia State Penitentiary and the Virginia State Prison Farm as part of a larger project to record American folk songs. The talk is one of a series of talks being given at the Library in conjunction with the "Virginia Roots Music" exhibition currently on display there.
