I am currently reading "American Colonies", by Alan Taylor, pub. by the
Penguin History of the United States, Eric Foner, Editor , Viking Press
(2001), which appears to fit your requirements. It covers the colonial
ventures of several European nations such as Spain, France, Holland, etc, as
well as Great Britain. It reads fairly well, but does have a definite bias
toward the downtrodden, i.e., native Americans and enslaved Africans, but
what else would one expect from a Univ. of California system history prof.
Dick in Williamsburg, VA
