The Virginia Genealogical Society Presents The Third Annual Virginia Institute Of Genealogical Research. This is an intensive, in-depth, 4-day immersion into Virginia resources to help you succeed in your Virginia genealogical research. Dates are Sunday-Thursday, 5-9 August 2001 at the Virginian Diocesan Center, Richmond, Va. Classes on Virginia resources and research techniques will be taught by noted Virginia researchers. In the evenings, participants are invited to join discussion groups, enjoy the recreational opportunities, or just relax. Two tracks will be offered-Track I for the novice Virginia researcher and Track II for the more experienced Virginia researcher. Track I includes instruction sessions on Virginia's geography, the Library of Virginia and its finding aids, 18th & 19th Century newspapers, county order books, religion and churches, special collections at the Virginia Historical Society, tithes and personal property taxes, and more. Track II focuses on Virginians and their land. It includes, Virginia land books, early land companies and bounty land records, other records in the Virginia Land Office finding and using maps, land platting, and more. There will also be six combined sessions over the four days, including using chancery cases, the rules of primogeniture and entail, using land taxes, and more. Local residents are invited to be day students. They may participate in the full institute program except lodging. The day student's fee (registration fee plus $175 for 12 meals) includes all costs for the entire period.
