Greetings Virginia genealogists! Phillip Wayne Rhodes and I are pleased to announce the publication of a valuable resource for those doing genealogy of "free people of color" in Central Virginia before and during the Civil War: *FREE BLACKS OF LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, 1805-1865* This book was recently published by the Southern Memorial Association for the Old City Cemetery of Lynchburg. It was co-authored by Ted Delaney, Cemetery Archivist and Curator, and Phillip Wayne Rhodes, Director of Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg. _Free Blacks of Lynchburg_ is the first historical and genealogical resource of its kind. The book explores free black life in antebellum and Civil War Lynchburg, including the legal status, occupations, religion, burial ground, and place in society of local "free people of color." Two extensive appendices contain a detailed listing of free black families buried in the Old City Cemetery and transcribed hustings court records, including hundreds of free black registrations, tax lists, orders of apprenticeship, and deeds of emancipation of slaves. Over 1,500 individuals and over 400 surnames are identified throughout the work. This 230-page hardbound, archival-quality book is fully indexed and illustrated. The book is now available for sale at the Cemetery Center. Orders by telephone, fax, mail, or e-mail are welcome. The cost is $25.00, plus $1.13 tax for Virginia residents. If necessary, add $3.00 for shipping. All proceeds support the SMA's ongoing work at the Old City Cemetery. Major funding for this publication was provided by the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust <www.lynchburgtrust.org>. If you prefer not to purchase your own copy, you may want to ask your local library to order one or more copies for its collection. Visit the cemetery's website for more information, <www.gravegarden.org>. Feel free to e-mail me at the address below if you have any questions.
