The Alexandria Library, Special Collections Division completed the project to index the 5 reel set of microfilm, NARA RG21 M1648 of the Naturalization Petitions, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia (Alexandria), 1909-1920. The microfilm includes material through about 1929. Included are about 1200 WWI era soldiers from all over the U.S. who were stationed at Camp Humphries, now Ft. Belvoir, as well as 354 local residents (Stafford through Fauquier up to and including Loudoun Counties and all areas to the north and east). We provide more detail in the notes section about our local residents including the initial Port of Entry (POE) to the U.S. Under immigration law in place between 1907 and 1922, a native born U.S. woman who married a resident alien subsequently derived her husband's (foreign) citizenship. After 1922, she had the opportunity to apply for naturalization to regain her American citizenship in her own right. We have several women for whom that condition applies. The data files are long and will take a few moments to arrive on your screen. The site is: http://www.alexandria.lib.va.us/citizen/citizen.htm -- Joyce A.
