R. L. Hinsdale, artist, lived at 75 Bleecker, New York City, in 1852. [The Directory of the City of New York for 1852-1853, p. 292, on Google Books]

R. L. Hinsdale, died at Hartford, Connecticut, Mar. 25, 1856, aged 39. [Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices: Connecticut Newspaper Notices, vol. 45, S. L. N. 146, on Ancestry.com]

The artist of your image appears to have a particular interest in social conditions near Yale College. The editor of "The Owl" seems to have a different motive in reprinting it. Both of them make light of slavery in the South.

Googling Hinsdale's name will give you a number of listings of his art works, and a few images.

Richardson and Cox were engravers based in New York City in the 1850s. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/683314

HI, Terry,

If you have not had someone reply, this link will take you to a google book with the mention of your source. P. 233, the notes.

Johns, Elizabeth. 1991. *American genre painting: the politics of everyday life*. New Haven: Yale University Press.
