Years ago I heard, probably at a genealogy training or conference, that it had been estimated that 20 percent of Americans, if they could/would trace their ancestry far enough, had at least one ancestor who had lived in Virginia.

This was heard at least 10, possibly 20 years ago, and I don't know if it was current or accurate then. Does anyone know if a similar estimate of Americans with Virginia roots has been done more recently, and what the results were? (Alternately, does anyone know the source of the 20 percent estimate? I've tried searching for it online and couldn't find it.)

Thanks!
