Many of the early (pre 1770s) "tithable" lists are actually tobacco lists. Most list tithables (which is how they were paid) rather than tobacco plants (there is one for Goochland that lists the number of tobacco plants). They are usually found in loose court papers in the fall and unhappily LVA does not identify the source of the lists that they remove and place in their tithable collection. Notations regarding succors or succor hunting and / or the omission of the names of slaves or other tithables is usually a clue. As far as I know the Accomac / Northampton (see Bell's publication on Northampton tithables) lists are the only ones that are early enough to count half-tithables.
