My G-Grandfather Benjamin Cullom was a Confederate soldier from N.C. & was captured on April 2, 1865 in the Siege of Petersburg & released on June 17, 1865 from Hart’s Island New York Harbor Prison Camp. There is a family story that his wife Lucy had a dream about 3 black birds. She told her children the next morning that their father was coming home. Sure enough, later in the day she saw three soldiers walking down the road towards the house. One was Benjamin, he stopped & the others continued on. He was so filthy that Lucy made him undress in the yard & she burned his clothes. It is not recorded how he traveled from N.Y. to N.C.
