As a reminder, the Second Georgia Regiment of the Continental Line was recruited primarily from Virginia. ________________________________ From: Bill Welsch <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 10:35 AM Subject: Re: [VA-HIST] Virginia soldiers in Am Rev? Jon, One source that quickly comes to mind is Charles H. Lesser's The Sinews of Independence: Monthly Strength Reports of the Continental Army, The University of Chicago Press, 1976. It's essentially copies of those original monthly strength reports from various archives. It gives detailed listings by both regiment and brigade. There are certainly gaps, and the emphasis is on the main army with Washington, with much less on the Southern Campaigns. It will also require some tabulation on your part to arrive at Virginia totals, but the numbers are there. Good luck. I'm looking for a reliable book/ article with accurate estimates of the numbers of Virginia soldiers involved in Revolutionary War units serving OUTSIDE the Commonwealth in northern or southern theaters. . . . Anecdotal evidence suggests a strong presence of Virginians joined Washington, and clearly Gov Henry devoted a lot of energy 1776-79 to recruitment and supplies, etc. Have looked at a lot of scholarship - Higginbotham, Lesser, Shy, Gruber, Selby, etc. and a quite a bit in JSTOR (though the search strategy is challenging) - but haven't yet found numbers that inspire confidence. Welcome suggestions of books / articles / good dissertations . . . Thank you Jon Kukla ________________ www.JonKukla.com <http://www.jonkukla.com/> ______________________________________ To subscribe, change options, or unsubscribe please see the instructions at http://listlva.lib.va.us/archives/va-hist.html ______________________________________ To subscribe, change options, or unsubscribe please see the instructions at http://listlva.lib.va.us/archives/va-hist.html ______________________________________ To subscribe, change options, or unsubscribe please see the instructions at http://listlva.lib.va.us/archives/va-hist.html
