On the James River, from the Port of Richmond, from either the Rocketts or Manchester docks, to someplace on the lower river, ships of brig size were in fact towed. Regardless of the ability and the sailing prowess of the crew and captains of these brigs, the fact remains that the ships / brigs were towed by steamboats down the James. One of the towboats used for towing brig size ships was the Ben Sheppard, late 1830s – 40s. I would like to know, where, at what location on the James River, were these ships / brigs towed to? Was it at Bermuda Hundred? Need primary source to confirm exact place where brigs were towed, down the James River - on their way to sea.
