In celebration of National Women's History Month, the Library of
Virginia is pleased to recognize the 2010 Virginia Women in
History--eight women, past and present, who have made important
contributions to Virginia, the nation, and the world. This year's
project marks the Library's participation in the 2010 statewide program
"Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts."
 
The 2010 Virginia Women in History are:
 

* Jean Miller Skipwith (1748-1826), Mecklenburg County, book collector

* Kate Mason Rowland (1840-1916), Richmond, writer; Nominated by
Patricia Costis's fourth-grade class (2009), Dreamkeepers Academy,
Norfolk

* Mollie Holmes Adams (1881-1973), King William County, Upper Mattaponi
leader

* Queena Stovall (1888-1980), Lynchburg and Amherst County, artist

* Ethel Bailey Furman (1893-1976), Richmond, architect

* Edythe C. Harrison (1934-    ), Norfolk, civic leader

* Marian A. Van Landingham (1937-   ), Alexandria, civic leader

* Janis Martin (1940-2007), Danville, singer

 
During March, the 2010 Virginia Women in History panel exhibition will
be on display in the lobby of the Library of Virginia. It will travel to
locations around the state for the rest of the year. A poster featuring
short biographies of each woman has been distributed to schools,
libraries, and museums throughout the state.

The Library of Virginia also invites you to our annual celebration
honoring women who have played an integral part in Virginia history. The
program begins at the Library on Thursday, 25 March 2010, at 6:00 p.m.
and will be followed by a reception. The event is free, but you must
call (804) 692-3900 by Thursday, 18 March, to reserve your seat.
