Co-sponsored by Dominion, the National Park Service, and the University of Richmond, Lincoln and the South will take place March 12-14, 2009 at the Jepson Alumni Center. Registration is still available at www.tredegar.org or you can register as a walk-in any day of the conference. Congress established the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to plan the nation’s celebration of the 16th president’s 200th birthday in 2009. The Commission works to engage the broadest range of individuals and groups in the commemoration. Through education programs, public forums, and the arts, the Commission provides an opportunity to re-examine Lincoln’s legacy in our 21st century democracy. Its members, who are appointed by the president and congressional leaders, include political leaders, jurists, historians, and collectors. The conference will commence on Friday, March 13 with a welcome by the Center’s President, Christy S. Coleman followed by a keynote by Dr. Edward L. Ayers, noted historian and president of the University of Richmond. Conference sessions include such topics as Lincoln and the South Get to Know One Another, Lincoln and the South at War, and Lincoln’s Legacy in the South. Visiting historians who will speak include: David Blight, Yale University; Fitzhugh Brundage, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Michael Burlingame, University of Connecticut; William J. Cooper, Jr., Louisiana State University; Brian Dirck, Anderson University; Christopher Phillips, University of Cincinnati; Leslie Rowland, University of Maryland; Nina Silber, Boston University; Manisha Sinha, University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
