Thanks, Connie, So the line through Martiou went almost totally to females and skipped John Washington altogether. I guess that's why Henry Wiencek didn't go into it in the book... it wasn't a "guy thing". <grin> In the book, Wiencek says George was descended from "middling planters", not from the high-n-mighty. But he does say that the Washingtons had a history of "marrying up". What I find interesting in the book (since it is not a boring tome on geneology anyway) is the light it shines on Washington's change of heart towards slavery in his later years culminating with freeing his slaves on his death, and Martha's on hers. My understanding is that John Washington married the daughter of Nathanial Pope, Ann, if I remember correctly. Is the connection from Martiou to Ann Pope?" Hi Anne, Sure, I'd be glad to. (I like Capt. Martiau, if you couldn’t tell!) The Martiaus come into the Washington line through the Warners: 1 Capt. Nicolas Martiau 2. Elizabeth Martiau m. Colonel Geoge Reade 3. Mildred Reade m. Colonel Augustine Warner II 4. Mildred Warner m. Laurence Washington 5. Colonel Augustine Washington m. Mary Ball 6. George Washington Since Martiau was born in Ile de Ré, France, the French Ambassador dedicated a statue of Washington at Saint-Martin de Ré in October 2007. On the base of the monument is a medallion representing Martiau.
