Good Lord.

I suppose this depends, truly, upon what the definition of "is" is.

Check out the evolution of the term, "mulatto" in the OED. . . . or,
for those who prefer not to use the term, "evolution," check out what
the OED says about the origins of the term and how its use has changed
over time.

Also check out the evolution and current status of the very notion of
"race."

Arguably, the use of the term, "mulatto," in the early 21st century
says much more about what the user "is" than it says about the
existential nature of the person to whom it is applied.

Or am reading something into this that isn't there?

Hmmmm.
