I have a funny/sad story about subject headings, though one must have a
little French to understand it. Years ago I worked at Time-Life as a photo
researcher alongside a wily veteran, whose experience went back to the
1940s. After WWII, she was at an archive in France doing picture research on
the war for LIFE. She was looking for photos of wounded soldiers, but
couldn't find anything filed under any variation of "soldiers--wounded,"
"troops--injured," "casualties," etc. Her French was very good, so she was
baffled at not being able to figure out the French subject heading system.
She asked an archivist how to find pictures of the war wounded, and was told
to look under "Misère."
