Thursday, February 07, 2008 _An African Republic: Black and White Virginians in the Making of Liberia_ by Marie Tyler-McGraw Time: Noon–1:00PM Place: Conference Rooms FREE EVENT The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce that Marie Tyler-McGraw will be with us to discuss and sign copies of her new work, _An African Republic_, on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at noon. _An African Republic_ traces the parallel but divergent tracks of black and white Virginians’ interest in African colonization. She follows the experiences of the emigrants from Virginia to Liberia, where some became the leadership class, consciously seeking to demonstrate black abilities, while others found greater hardship and early death. The 19th century American Colonization Society (ACS) project of persuading all American free blacks to emigrate to the ACS colony of Liberia could never be accomplished. Few free blacks volunteered, and greater numbers would have overwhelmed the meager resources of the ACS. No state was more involved with the project than Virginia, where white Virginians provided much of the political and organizational leadership and black Virginians provided a majority of the emigrants. The Library of Virginia is located at 800 East Broad Street in downtown Richmond. A limited amount of free parking is available under the building. www.lva.virginia.gov 804.692.3900 Other Upcoming Events: Monday, February 11 at noon Book Talk - Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution by Woody Holton Tuesday, February 19 at noon Lecture - Remembering Richmond’s Tommy Edwards and “It’s All in the Game” by Don W.
