Dear VA-HIST, This topic has come up on occasion...what was the historical county line going through Petersburg, VA? Now the NHGIS (National Historical Geographic Information System: www.nhgis.org) has the line going basically north-south through what is modern day Petersburg. However a colleague has found a map at: http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/us_states/virginia/topo/index.html which shows a dark dashed line running north to Lieutenant Creek (called Lieutenant Run in modern-day TIGER), then apparently following the creek, then right about where the creek starts to turn north-south, a dotted line breaks off to the northeast until the edge of the urbanized area, then heads roughly north to the Appomattox River. Is this dotted line the original county line? I am thinking it is, although it is different from the dark dashed line south of the city.
