This is your chance to experience the excitement of the past and present of Historic Jamestowne. Don't pass on the opportunity to attend this annual series and learn about the wonders and challenges of the founding of this nation. 9 October 2007 First lecture: "Jamestown, More Buried Truth . . ." by Dr. William Kelso, APVA Director of Archaeology Hear about the plan behind the excavations and discovery of the remains of James Fort. Includes updates on the most current discoveries from the on-going excavations during 2007 and the exciting events surrounding the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. 30 October 2007 Second lecture: "From Goats to Griffins: Animals, Real and Imaginary, at Jamestown" by Bly Straube, APVA Historic Jamestowne Senior Curator The archaeological investigations of James Fort have revealed that many animals, both real and imagined, accompanied the English colonists to Virginia in the early 17th century. Most came as livestock, providing an important source of food; but some were brought for purposes of hunting, protection, transportation, pest control, or companionship. The English also brought numerous imaginary animals depicted on the many objects they transported across the ocean for their use. These animals provided symbols by which individuals or institutions could be easily recognized in the colonial society. 13 November 2007 Third lecture: A special 2007 lecture presented by Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz, NASA Astronaut, Retired, presenting "Exploration Then and Now...An Astronaut's Perspective." The spirit and courage of the Jamestown settlers hold many lessons and examples for today's explorers. Come, listen, and learn about the continued effort in exploring worlds beyond those we know. Future plans may very well be guided by the lessons of Jamestown's past. NASA has been a partner to the Jamestown Rediscovery project, including the recent effort, when the 17th-century lead James Towne shipping tag went into space on space shuttle mission STS-117. The tickets for the lecture entire lecture series are $28 for all three or $10 each individually. The lectures will be held in the Kimball Theatre, Merchants Square, Williamsburg, Virginia, at 7:00 p.m. Visit the Kimball Theatre here <http://apva.c.topica.com/maah5CMabBEQPaKkLTjeaeQCOp/> for contact/ticket information, or telephone 1-800-HISTORY.
