Connie thank you for your answer.  An alternative spelling is Spry.  When Oliver purchased land in Isle of Wight in 1630 it was for his venture.  I have not found any record of his having ventured anything and thought that perhaps he inherited his capitol from Captain Henry Spry(e).

The Sprys are interesting enough found mainly in Somerset County and St. Mary's county Maryland.  One ground came over to Maryland from Cornwall around 1670, so your suggestion of Somerset is interesting.

Once again thank you for your respond.  It placed the compact much more in old world context.  I had forgotten about the 100 Years War ending about the time of the second fleet.
