Swem Library at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg invites you to join us on Wednesday, October 24, at 3:30 p.m. for a lecture by Professor Melvin Ely of William and Mary's History Department. Prof. Ely will speak on his latest project, "A Horrible Intimacy: Whites and Enslaved Blacks in Old Virginia." Winner in 2006 of Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award, Ely also received numerous awards for his previous book, "Israel on the Appomattox: A Southern Experiment in Black Freedom from the 1790s through the Civil War," which earned the Bancroft Prize as well as the Albert J. Beveridge Award and the Wesley-Logan Prize from the American Historical Association. Swem is sponsoring the lecture in conjunction with its exhibit, "Slavery in Virginia," on display through November 2. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Read-and-Relax area on Swem's first floor.
