I agree with Anne.  Too often students today are very weak in their
historical knowledge and so they are at a disadvatage for understanding
their own times and the challenges that will come in their future.  How
can they come to grips with an on-going issue like racial discrimination
(since that's what this thread seems to be circling) without
understanding its roots?  How can they comprehend that past without
peopling it with its varied characters, good and bad?

So were Harry Byrd, Jeff Davis, and perhaps others who are part of
Virginia 
student studies. I think it is important that our students learn the bad

side of our history along with the platitudes.
