There is a rather famous photo taken in the 1910s or 1920s, I believe, of
the banner the NAACP would unfurl in front of its headquarters after each of
these murders. It said something like "Another Negro Was Lynched Yesterday."
I'm working from memory, so I may be wrong about the date and the precise
wording; but my point is the NAACP tried to keep a close watch and an
accurate count, and to blare the awful news to the country.
