Surry County, VA, court records indicate that slaves on the Allen plantation at Claremont were sometimes paid for "working over their task". I recall that William Allen bought a seine, and slaves who fished with it on the night tides received half the profit from the sale of the fish. It has been a few years since I worked with these records, but they come from guardians' accounts for William (Orgain) Allen in the 1830s and 1840s.Eve S. Gregory, Web Mistress
