John et al.:

Every era has its own notions of "political correctness and
incorrectness." Those in the "correct" camp find it difficult to imagine
that intelligent people might look askance at their sacred cows, while
those in the "incorrect" camp will always feel it their duty to question
prevailing interpretations and assumptions. If history were simply a
matter of the replication of traditional ways, generation after
generation, we would not be plagued by this swinging pendulum. But
modern history, at least, is the story of change, and one of the things
that changes is our view of our history: e.g., ways of interpreting the
Jamestown settlement and the "making of America."
