One area you might want to explore is the contribution of Powhatan Algonquin 
words to the English language. Most of the Indian words incorporated into 
English come from the Powhatan Indians. This especially covers a lot of food 
items which might work well into your food angle. 

Some examples:

raccoon
opossum
chinquapin
persimmon
pecan
hominy
terrapin
moccasin
tomahawk
puccone

Also, one drink described by Strachey is a walnut milk made with crushed 
walnuts and water. It's called "pocohack"

Strachey and Archer write quite a bit about the diet of the Indians.
