If I had enough time, which unfortunately I don't, I would go search
through the diaries and letters of John Adams, who wrote little
thumb-nail sketches of the men he met while he was serving in the
Continental Congress. About one of them (I think I recall that it was
Thomas Nelson) Adams noted that he spoke very fast, like all the
Virginians.

So much for hot, lazy, ignorant Southerners and their drawls.
