usually it refers to a parent, guardian, or other adult suing on behalf of a minor; at some times might refer to a man suing on behalf a woman; it might also on occasion have been used for a white who sues on behalf of a free black or slave alleging to be free. I don't know if I have ever seen these last two examples, but they might exist. The first one is pretty common.
