Edwin Sandys was also responsible for some of the most irresponsible policies and practices in early Virginia history. Don't we have him to thank for the "flourishing" silk and sassafras "industries" that made Virginia great? He also had great culpability in the needless deaths of 3000-4000 colonists and the demise of the Virginia Company. As both a visionary and a businessman, he was a flop. I still think that the "greatest Virginian" must be someone who actually was in Virginia, influencing, and being influenced by, its unique qualities and development.
