This is a followup to Jim Hershey's reply to Brent's "thread
starter" on 20th century Virginians.

I am always looking for scholarly essays on 20th century
Virginia. If its in the Journal of Southern History or the
VMHB, I know about it. But if its in a more obscure Journal
(eg., one that is not included in JSTOR), or if it is a book
chapter, I may very well not have found it. I am especially
interested in essays which are more broadly focused, and which
are accessible to a general audience (ie., my undergrads in
Virginia history courses).

So--what are the best essays that discuss Virginia history in
the 20th century? For those of you who teach Virginia
history, what have you found that works best?

Many thanks,
Kevin
